In the next few weeks the annual event Pace Preview will be taking place. The Office of Housing and Residential Life (OHRL) and the Office of Undergraduate Admissions cosponsor two overnight expeditions for high school seniors to be able to experience the University first hand.
As an high school senior, I participated in Pace Preview, then called The Core, and was sold on the atmosphere and possibilities. I met the motivated students who wanted the best out of Pace, the housing staff and different professors who made me question my wanted major.
Most importantly I met my future roommate. I hated politics – she loved them. I was not a happy camper to be playing Model UN – she was in her glory. I asked her how to pronounce my country’s name so I wouldn’t look ridiculous – she laughed and said that was the country her parents were from. We hit it off instantly and are still great friends today.
The next best part was my host Raven and her roommate. Raven was laid back but sick, so her roommate, Amy, gave me the tour. Amy was the most energetic person I had met. As we ate grilled cheese sandwiches close to midnight in the Spotlight Café, she seem genuinely excited to show off the campus. Her energy made me begin to imagine myself in her room with my own high school memorabilia with an awesome roommate.
I won’t lie to you and say I loved the classroom experience (it was a business class – not my forte) but I do remember liking the feel of being able to see the board with about 20 students.
I guess what I am trying to say, or ask, is during the two upcoming overnights (March 7-8 and April 11-12) show your Pace pride to these future freshman. They could be your next lab partner who helps you ace an experiment or your scene partner who helps you impress a director. Simply put, a friend could be in the group so give them an experience they will remember years later.
If you live in the Maria’s Tower or 55 John Street residence halls and want to host a student, ask your RA for information.
