Panera: a far trek from Manhattan, but worth it

Panera Bread is one of my favorite chain restaurants. While it may not have a huge variety of food – they tend to stick to salads, soups and sandwiches – the food they do serve is outstandingly good for a strip mall chain.

Unfortunately, few New Yorkers get to experience the wonder that is Panera on a daily basis as the franchise doesn't have any stores in the borough of Manhattan.

In order to indulge in my favorite chicken sandwich and broccoli cheddar soup, I have a few options, all of which take a lot of time and effort to get to.

There are many Paneras in New Jersey, a short ride away on a NJ Transit bus, a few located in the far away neighborhoods of Queens on the border of Nassau County and there is one in the Baychester area of the Bronx. The closest location is in Long Island City, Queens, but even that requires a 40-minute trek from the downtown area.

For most Manhattanites, these locations may as well be on the other side of the planet. I love Panera so much that I've legitimately considered forgoing a career in journalism to open a franchise in the city.

While similar restaurants like Cosi somewhat make up for the lack of Panera, there is really nothing comparable to a cinnamon chip bagel, toasted and sliced at Panera Bread.
