The War Against Unions

I did not expect the real reason for the war on unions to be coming from the building at 1211 Avenue of the Americas. But it did in fact come from Fox News studios during a segment with Fox News contributor Juan Williams and Studio B host Shepard Smith.

Perhaps our fears are justified

Since the ‘Day Of Rage,' I must have heard or read the words Muslim Brotherhood more times than I can remember; every time it was preceded or followed by some cautionary words of wisdom.

Poetry Brothel name too offensive for some poetry enthusiasts

I read about the Poetry Brothel in The Pace Press and I applaud the idea of getting students involved in poetry and providing a format and a venue for them to share their creative endeavors. I'm unhappy, however, with this format of a "brothel" and especially with referring to the poets as "The Whores." I think it's sexist, reeks of slumming for entertainment, glamorizes prostitution in a naive and ill-informed way and is in poor taste.

Student activity fee funds University events

Recently around campus I came across a flyer that said, "Pace University spent $18,000 on Ryan Leslie. While 1.5 Million New Yorkers live in poverty and 91% of college students are in debt. Don't allow Pace to waste our $$$."

How to avoid (or deal with) hickeys

Alarm rings, you roll out of bed; head to the mirror, and to your surprise you have an unexpected guest glaring back at you; a hickey.

Students praise the office of Academic Resources

Many of us would associate 41 Park Row with the campus bookstore. The building is also home, however, to another important resource: Academic Resources, located on the second floor. Shannon Haick, Associate Director of Academic Resources on the NYC Campus, explains the purpose of this program.

Egyptians all over the world rally in support of protests

President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt has been in office for the past 30 years and now that his term is slowly approaching its end, the Egyptian people are anxious to see him out. Unlike many nations, however, this upcoming term does not exactly set forth the change that these people are itching for.

An open letter to Max Moreno

My Beloved Max,

As I am writing this, it is almost four months to the day you were murdered. The same question still arises: why you? Why were you taken away from us? Why was your time here on earth cut short? To maintain my sanity and cover the wounds that will never heal, I like to think that you were too good for this world. I like to think that it was your time to become an angel and watch over us.

What happened to Camelot?

On Jan. 20, 2011 Americans celebrated the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy's inauguration as the 35th President of the United States. On that cold winter day in a bygone era, a young, charismatic Irish Catholic summoned Americans to "ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."

Thanksgiving is tough for a vegan

The pilgrims pioneered the American tradition of expressing gratefulness amidst gorging on hearty fodder as a celebratory response to the fact that at least half of the group that sailed across the Atlantic Ocean on the Mayflower in 1620 survived their first year in the New Land.

The trouble with leggings and Uggs

I love winter with all my heart. I can wear huge shapeless sweaters and eat whatever I please so nobody can see my true figure. In fact, I think most people thrive with winter fashions. You can never go wrong with a nice coat and straight pant.

Save the starving journalists, Rupert Murdoch

When Limewire was shut down, most people grasped the significance of its inconvenience and reacted immediately. While the idea of paying for music after accessing it instantly — and for free — for so long rouses some unpleasant reactions from the general population, it is widely understood that the artists deserve to be paid for their talent.

Recycling as it relates to consciousness

There is something new at the University. To figure out whether or not you have felt its presence, check yourself for the following symptoms: Do you feel the need to recycle more?

Twitter’s lack of account security concerns users

With Twitter's increased popularity within the last year with its simplistic concept of a status update, one would assume that its security would be modeled heavily or at least somewhat after that of Facebook.

Something “Spectacular” going on in NYC

For someone who has lived in New York for eleven years, I received weird looks for saying "I've never been to the Christmas Spectacular before." My friends all rolled their eyes as they stepped off the party bus, telling me that they've gone with their parents a million times before and that it was nothing too "spectacular." I passed their comments off as teenage angst and ungrateful American child syndrome, convinced that it would indeed be spectacular.

A woman in charge

I'm a Democrat. It's certainly an awkward way to preface an article but it's important in the context of what I am about to say. This election season I am putting aside my partisan difference to give my full support to the Republican candidate for Congress in the 19th district, Dr. Nan Hayworth. I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Hayworth in early October as I traveled to her campaign office in Carmel, NY to assist her in debate prep at the behest of a close friend, Jesse Dwyer.

The era of tech babies

My 20-month-old son, Luca, was watching his first episode of "Tom and Jerry." I pointed to Jerry and said "Look, mouse!" He went into the other room and came back holding a computer mouse.

GreenPace giving out sustainability awards

A new award has stepped onto the scene here at Pace University, and is pushing for the spotlight over blue and gold — Green! GreenPace (a university-wide committee dedicated to promoting sustainability at Pace), is now offering awards to students, staff, faculty members, clubs, groups and organizations that put forth the effort to go green!

The sorting hat comes to the University

I happened upon The Dessert Extravaganza as I did all other University events — by complete twist of fate. I was having a baby emergency this particular morning, causing me to arrive to class late.

Paladino’s anti-gay remarks may affect voters’ decisions

Carl Paladino, Republican candidate for governor of New York, is stirring up an abyss of trouble that he cannot seem to find his way out of.

Stop Iran Now

I had the opportunity to speak with the Secretary of Defense Robert Gates this past summer at the Pentagon. I asked him pointedly what a war with Iran would look like. I was quite surprised at how candid he was in his response when he told me an attack against Iran would be "ugly" and it would cause a lot of instability in the Middle East.

MTA screws up NYC’s weekend plans again

This weekend, about 50 percent of all train lines were listed under "planned work," which meant alternate routes, taking inconvenient shuttle buses and severe delays for the lines that were running.

Lady Gaga is taking over despite the haters

Whether you want to talk about it or not, Lady Gaga is taking over the world. What is interesting to me is that there is an audience out there that loves Gaga, and there is also an audience that seems to strongly dislike Gaga. Personally, I find it hard to understand why one may dislike this artist. As I really think about it, I come up with a few points.

University’s statistics show a female majority

Women are on a mission, to find a man; and not just any man, a straight man. As simple as that may sound, it is far from it. Determining a man's sexual preferences has become a sport for some ladies; so much so that many have developed code words and phrases to communicate with their counterparts while still in front of the man in question. To better understand the predicament that these ladies are in, let's look at the statistics.

Forever Young

Words from one ZBT brother to another

"May the best of your todays be the worst of your tomorrows", that quote from the Jay Z song "Forever Young" never made more sense than now. Max's favorite rapper was Jay Z and ironically enough his words are the ones helping me, my fraternity brothers and many of his friends and family cope with his loss.

Student hopes NYC will be tolerant of all religions

I have never been ashamed of my religion.  Sure, good ole' boy Bible thumpers make me nervous, but I had always assumed tolerance was a central tenant of my faith.

An abusive relationship

In early 2006, she told him it was time to start gathering his belongings and move out. By November 7, 2006, most of his stuff was gone from both houses but she wanted everything moved out of the big white mansion that they owned together down the street soon, preferably by November 4, 2008.

A call for support to the Pace Community

I am a Haitian-American who has lived in Haiti my whole life. After my first semester away from home, I went back to Haiti for Christmas break. On Jan. 12, I was on my way to get ice cream at the Village at the Montana Hotel with my friend Claudia. The Village is on top of a parking garage. It had shops, restaurants and a chapel.

You can have success after graduation

Given the extraordinary stresses in our economy, including the high rate of unemployment and the low rate of job creation, Pace students are concerned about their job prospects. Here's what we know so far.

For those who haven't heard about the latest Christmas craze, Zhu Zhu Pets are the Tickle Me Elmo's of 2009. The little electronic hamsters are number one on the Christmas lists of children across the United States.

With friends, enemies there is no gray area

Why is there such a word as frenemies? I miss the days when you just had friends and enemies.

Appreciating the kindness of others

I've come to really appreciate the people here at Pace that do whatever they can to help the students. Sometimes I think we all might forget what is done for us to keep things moving along.

What’s so good about: "The Pace Press"

I would say everything, but that would be biased and the whole point of The Press is to be objective.

Release your inner poet with Aphros

Have you heard of Aphros? Or maybe you've seen glossy, pocket-sized poetry books in the newspaper stands in late April or early May?

All you need is love

For the past three weeks there has been a recurring topic that I have discussed with many of my close friends and that is love and relationships. The controversial topic that is bound to get underneath our skin no matter what mood we are in.

Panera: a far trek from Manhattan, but worth it

Panera Bread is one of my favorite chain restaurants. While it may not have a huge variety of food – they tend to stick to salads, soups and sandwiches – the food they do serve is outstandingly good for a strip mall chain.

Cheaters never win

Have you ever sat in class during an exam only to look up and see a fellow student pull a paper out of their bag, write something down, then sneak it back out of sight?

What about a student pulling up their sleeve to look at definitions written on their wrist?

The truth about sustainability

"There ain't no such thing as a free lunch" has been traced to the late 19 century when saloons in the U.S. offered free lunch for their paying customers.

Obviously the idea has since become a cornerstone of economics by emphasizing that whenever we make a choice then we have to sacrifice something else in exchange.

You should understand why we fight

A brief background on Afghanistan is required to understand how important that country is to the security of the United States and to the stability of the Middle East.

I am the fireman, say a prayer for me

What does it mean to be a protector of life or more appropriately a saver of life? We underestimate the laws of nature when we see a police officer pull over a car or an ambulance leave with the sirens on, careening out into the distance.

We don't look at the fire truck and say, "Oh my God. Do these guys ever get a break?" No! For all we see is an official vehicle heading out to do a job.

Aphros Literary Magazine: The best kept secret at the University

I think that Aphros, Pace University's Literary and Art magazine, is the best kept secret at Pace.

The 2009 edition is captivating with its glossy, black and white cover drawing of the inside layers of a tree bark by Laura Senkevitch. The magazine's inside layers of poetry , prose and artwork are equally engaging.

It’s only your life, but choose carefully

Many students are undecided about their future careers

Whether your dream is to become an actor, entrepreneur, or just to be famous for being famous, everyone comes to college with an ideal. Or the lucky ones do, anyway. So why does it seem that the "undecided" students are becoming more prevalent in colleges?

It seems obvious that choosing what you want to do needs to be a rational decision, but when did it become insane to choose what you truly want to do? Since living here at Pace University, it seems the ideas need to be fresher, newer and the bottom line needs to be the dollar sign.

A Love Knocked Down

These days modern day music is far from anything original sad to say. I hardly pay attention to mainstream musicians or bands. If I do they definitely need to have something unique about them. Specifically, I usually target a musician's sound such as the compilation of instrumentals, vocals, etc.

If I am really interested I'll look into their personality, history and how they came into profession of working in the music industry. That's exactly what I did with Kanye West.

Get Ready To Make Googly Eyes

There used to be a time when vampires were cool. This oft-romanticized era, a time where vampires were ghouls and things that went bump in the night, isn't too far removed from the present either.

Vampires dressed like that Goth kid no one wanted to talk to in class. They wore black, they were sort of creepy/sort of tragic, and there was always a way to kill them dead with some handy UV rays. Now they are all good looking and always striking a pose as if they're about to be photographed for a GAP ad. That's right folks, no more burning to a smoldering pile of ash anymore.

We Need A Public Option

Healthcare reform in America has become the number one issue in American politics today. Reminiscent of 1993, advocates of both sides of the issue are out in full swing making their pitch to America about why their particular position on the issue is the right one.

Watching cable news, reading newspapers and listening to people on both sides of the issue, one can't help but fall on one side of the issue. I believe that I am on the right side of the issue, that we need comprehensive healthcare reform in America that allows for a public healthcare option that will give coverage to all Americans who want it.

A Presidency dilemma: it’s definitely about race

There's no doubt that the election of Barack Obama last year led to a groundswell of enthusiasm and hope throughout America and the rest of the world. In some corners of our country, however, the election of the first African American and non-white President stirred up a lot of old sentiment about the role of race and power in American politics.

Become happy, become successful

President’s advice: apply yourself and enjoy college life

I would like to start the year by talking directly to each Pace student. This semester begins or continues what should be one of the most meaningful periods in your life. Studying at a great university is a learning experience in the broadest sense of that word, involving not just the classroom but your journey to becoming a responsible adult.

In’s and Out’s of the University

Find out what the Editors picked to be "In" and "Out" for the 2009-2010 academic year.

Hand sanitizer junkies: Get ready for Heaven on Earth

Have you seen those hand sanitizers around? Along with the signs accompanying all of them explaining with cutesy little characters that show us how to "cover the cough"?

They are the new eye candy near the elevators, in the sky lobby of Maria's Tower and near the Café 101 entrance. No longer will we be reading about upcoming clubs meetings or spotlighted speaker series around the University, but now we will be constantly reading about how to prevent H1N1 Flu or "swine flu." And for good reason.

New school year brings paparazzi to Brown University

I love school supplies. Autumn has always been my favorite time of year because it means peruse the aisles of Staples or Office Max, picking out new notebooks and fountain pens. One thing that heading back to school should not involve, however, is paparazzi.
