University students in attendance at the 2nd debate viewing party were among the 69.9 million viewers watching the vice presidential debate on Oct. 2, 2008. Students gathered in the Schimmel Theatre for the view party headed by political science professor Christopher Malone.
The evening was initiated with a series of past political debate viewings, where Malone analyzed the various tactics used by past political debaters and their historical significance, drawing comparisons from past tactics to the current ones of Barack Obama and John McCain. Students anticipated similar actions of vice presidential candidates Joe Biden and Sarah Palin.
Referencing the counter attack of Dan Quayle during the 1992 Vice Presidential where Quayle diverted attention from past mishaps to the weaknesses of the Democratic ticket head candidate Bill Clinton, Malone reminded students to be watch for similar jugular attacks between the evening's candidates.
"I feel that anytime an attack about Palin's inexperience with foreign policy is made, she is going to go right to Obama's inexperience," Nk Udogwu, senior political science major, said.
Malone presented footage of past Biden debates where the candidate's debate style varied between a "succinct and informative Biden" to a "loose-lipped rambling Biden." Questions concerning which of the two Biden "personalties would prevail" during the debates dominated floor discussion.
Speculation of a poor Palin performance were voiced by students, referencing past public appearances where Palin's "irrelevant" anecdotes about being able to see Russia from Alaska and delivered evasive responses during interviews.
As the debate proceeded student questions were answered, where Biden presented cohesive and respectful arguments, a big difference from his previous gaffes issued during the 2007 October democratic candidate debates.
"Biden couldn't be as aggressive on Palin as he had been in the past because he'd be coined as the bully picking on 'the little girl" sophomore political science major Colin Seerberger said.
