Anyone who goes to Pace knows one doesn't have to go far to find people, who have never even heard of the institution. Just ask an employee at Dunkin' Donuts down the street or get in a cab and tell the driver "Pace University!" it's likely that they don't even know what Pace is, let alone where it is.
When most people hear the words college and New York City, the first schools that come to mind are NYU and Columbia. They carry with them a reputation that is known throughout the country.
In some ways, Pace is still relatively unknown. Those looking for a school in Manhattan may stumble upon it, while others may never hear of it. Does this fact, in some ways, affect students' attitudes towards the university? Some students feel, walking down the hallways of One Pace Plaza, that many of their fellow classmates don't really want to be here.
Sixty students were asked if Pace was their first choice. Fifteen said yes, Pace was their first choice, while the other 45 said, in one way or another, that it was not, many of them included emphatic "no" responses.
Gwen Limbach said, "Pace definitely wasn't my first choice or my second... or my third. Nor was it for anyone I know."
Students have mixed feelings about the University. Catherine Boland describes her feeling as one of apathy. "I was indifferent about Pace from the beginning. I just go to class. I don't hate the school."
Becky Novak said, "The only incentive was the scholarship."
Many students have a number of complicated reasons why they ended up attending Pace. Then again, others are here simply because it is the school they always wanted to attend. Joyce Elie says, "Pace was my first choice and I got accepted to NYU."
