President Caputo OK'ed the Sky Lobby in November. Tower residents were informed of the change while checking out for winter break.
"I believe the president went through with the Sky Lobby because he trusted that staff, buildings and grounds, and housing were going to handle the transition," Michelle Perez said, director of Housing and Residential Life.
"The reason for the change was because of all the elevator traffic," Perez said. "It was unfair that they had to share elevators with everyone just to get to their rooms."
Other reasons included it being unreasonable to go all the way down to the B-level and cross over to the other set of elevators just to get to their classes. Having students urge to use the stairs frees up the elevators and encourages a healthier life style, she claims.
"At first I was kind of spectacle about the Sky Lobby," said freshman Stephanie Conrad, "but now we can walk to any floor."
"Not only is it much easier to get to class," Katie Henry said, "but there is not as much noise because that stupid Fire/Emergency alarm does not go off as much." The alarms have been moved to the fourth floor instead of the third floor.
"It's only a pain when you're not going to class," said freshman Mike Spatacco.
One security guard stated, "It is not a hassle anymore and the kids cooperate."
"We strive to continue to access the needs of our residents and communities. We encourage students to give us any feedback and/or ideas they have," said Perez. "Maybe we could even open a pathway to the west side of the fourth floor. Of course we would have to ensure safety, and students would have to respect the roof."
"It is so pretty," said sophomore Tiffany Anderson. "I just wish it was like that when I was living in the Towers."
