Do you like to laugh? Have you been looking for a great place to see some class-A comedy? Well, you don't have to look as far as you thought. Pace University is home to the sketch comedy troupe entitled Better Than the Machine. The group was started last year by Reid Levin and his friends and has flourished into a spectacle to see. They perform sketches and skits produced and written by the students in the group. When asked what their comedic inspirations were, veteran member Vickie Carter replied, "Saturday Night Live and Monty Python." Although Better Than the Machine wanted to stay small, they held auditions in the fall and are now composed of nine people, many of whom are young and eager freshmen. This comedy ensemble meets every other Wednesday during common hour where they write, read and rehearse sketches written by the members. Some of the skits are even filmed for video. They feel that they are an important group because they provide students with a great outlet to write, perform and direct as well as a great opportunity for everyone (especially non-majors) to get involved in theater and to be funny.

So, how do you get to experience firsthand the hilarious comedy of Better Than the Machine? Well, you're in luck because they are having their annual show on Friday, February 13 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, February 15 at 5 p.m. The entrance fee is only $2, plus there's free pizza! The show will showcase both live and videotaped skits and is well worth your money and time. Carter stated that the group has, "a really eclectic sense of humor because of the many different writers," and that out of all the skits one of her favorites is, "one that's a result (2nd part) to another sketch about a historical figure and a small boy and the special bond between them." The group proves to have a sketch for every person since all the members write the skits and bring something new to the table. Better Than the Machine hopes that in the future they will get more people coming to their shows, getting excited about the comedy they produce, and supporting them. This is one event at Pace that is worth going to and one group of comedic kids that is definitely going places. So come out, laugh and enjoy a great night with Better Than the Machine. I know I will.
