The morning of Nov. 2, New York City was honored to receive the latest amphibious assault warship, the USS New York.

Its Bow stern section was cast from 7.5 tons of World Trade Center steel. Even the Skyline café onboard gives tribute to the twin towers.

This advanced expeditionary fighting vessel is the fifth San Antonio Class warship bestowed the name of USS New York (LPD-21).

Its revolutionary hull design lends it a greater stealth capability during wartime operations. Bristling with hardware such as the latest LCAC hovercrafts, Expeditionary Fighting Vehicles and MV-22B Osprey tilt rotor aircrafts; it can reach speeds up to 22 knots. On board it has the largest amphibious dock in the US Military inventory.

Christened March 1, 2008 it will be commissioned this Saturday and remained docked until Veteran’s Day. Its motto: “Strength forged through sacrifice. Never forget.” The ship will be docked at Pier 88 and will remain open to the public to explore until Nov. 11.
