People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is one of the largest animals rights’ organizations with two million members. The organization is well known for stirring up controversy where possible and for their scantily clad celebrity ads flaunting the tagline, “I’d rather go naked than wear fur.” Lately, most of PETA’s ads seem to be focusing on more of the nudity than the animal rights.

PETA was founded in 1980 and soon after established a strong reputation by revealing animals being used for experiment in 1981. Since then, they have continued to reign as the most recognized and the most active animals right organization in the country and in the world.

According to PETA’s mission statement, “PETA focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: on factory farms, in laboratories, in the clothing trade, and in the entertainment industry.”

They have managed to gain support for high media figures in order to
sway lawmakers to end crude activities such as animal testing through their most famous campaign aforementioned above.

Their latest nude campaign came just in time for President Obama 2010 State of the Union Address. PETA took the liberty of posting their own version titled, “PETA’s 2010 State of the Union Undress.”

Of course, PETA understands what is appealing to Americans: sex. But some might say that the organization is going a little too far with the nudity.

In the 2010 State of the Union Undress video features PETA organization members. One could only question what the concept is of featuring a naked PETA member doing a mini striptease along with intermittent clips of the State of the Union address.

The line between advertising and inappropriate nudity has blurred in today’s society and PETA seems to be taking full advantage. Thus, PETA is well known for delivering their their message for animal rights through nudity without obscurity.
