McDonald's Chicken McNuggets contain the same ingredient used to make Silly Putty. Other fast food products including, but not limited to, hot dogs, patties and nuggets contain a pink like product known as Mechanically Separated Meat (MSM).
MSM is created through a process known as Advanced Meat Recovery (AMR). The process involves taking the remains of chickens, pigs and turkey carcass' and putting them through a high-pressure sieve which separates the bones from the remaining meat tissue. This is ground up to create a pink meat paste, MSM found in certain fast foods.
"I can tell you the nuggets arrive in a big box and twenty-four of the nuggets come in each little bag, but McDonalds doesn't tell us anything about the food except the caloric value," Queens McDonalds Manager Shenell Alfred said.
This process was initiated by machine in the 1960s. Before then, the remaining meat left between ribs and the spine of the animals was disposed of in addition to the bones.
The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) stated that products containing mechanically separated chicken or pork are safe to eat, however those products must be indicated as containing such elements.
McDonalds Chicken McNuggets, however, do not contain MSM. Since 2003 McDonalds claimed that their nuggets consist of "all white meat."
What they failed to mention was that they also contained some of the same ingredients that are used to make Silly Putty.
CNN Senior Medical Producer David Martin stated, "American McNuggets contain the medical preservative, tertiary butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), a petroleum-based product, they also contain dimethylpolysiloxane an antifoaming agent also used in Silly Putty."
"I like that they're so tiny and small, it's so filling when I'm in a rush and need meat protein to fill my stomach. They have that crunchy great taste. Wendy's and Burger King don't compare," junior Zina Kaganovich said.
When informed about the contents of the Chicken McNuggets, her opinion was slightly altered. "It obviously makes me not want to eat them, but I'm not going to think about it the next time I buy them. It's very frustrating but enjoyable," Kaganovich said.
