The MTV Video Music Awards came to New York City this year after having previously been held in Los Angeles, Calif. The red carpet stretched down West 51st Street from 6th Avenue to the doors of Radio City Music Hall.
Members of the press lined each side, recording devices at the ready, while across 51st Street, fans huddled together with posters ready to scream for each celebrity that passed, and that they did.
As Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Kanye West, Jack Black and many more walked into the VMA’s, the crowd screamed and waved in the hope that they might be noticed.
Holly Montag, the infamous Heidi Montag’s little sister, walked the carpet with a Hills co-star. She explained that her sister, Heidi and brother-in-law, Spencer Pratt, were at home for the night, after a busy summer of public appearances.
Montag, who attended the University of Colorado, majored in film studies and “minored in drinking,” she shared with college newspaper representatives. She said that she regretted her excessive drinking and would advise any incoming freshmen not to follow in her drunken footsteps.
Kid Sister -- a Chicago rapper known for her single, “Pro Nails,” featuring Kanye West -- showed up with bedazzled fingernails. She talked about her excitement, saying, “I’m just excited to be at a concert because I love shows.” She wasn’t sure who she most wanted to see, just that there were so many well-respected artists surrounding her.
Kid Sister may have worked with Kanye West, but she still seemed slightly in awe of everything going on around her. “To be here, to see all this... it’s just so crazy!” she said.
Breakout Video nominee, Anjulie was thrilled to be amongst so many of her idols. When asked who she most wanted to see, she explained, “I’m excited to see Lady Gaga’s performance because I think she’s awesome. I’m excited to see Beyonce because she’s also totally awesome. And Janet [Jackson]!”
The young artist concluded, “There are a lot of big girls here…” She paused to think about what she’d said and laughed. “Not big fat girls,” she corrected, “but big strong women.”
On the subject of her nomination, Anjulie said, “I’m really excited. It’s amazing even to be nominated.” While Matt and Kim’s video beat her’s for the award, Anjulie obviously struck a chord with MTV audiences and won’t be going away anytime soon.
Sean Kingston walked the carpet with a friend dressed as a cartoon version of him. His friend remained silent while following him around, but Kingston stopped to say hello to various other celebrities and members of the press. He even did a little dance for representatives of J-14.
Jack Black showed up wearing fake muscles on his arms and carrying a battle ax. Despite his crazy attire, Lady Gaga still outdid him with a blood red outfit that confused and even scared nearly everyone at the show.
Kanye West’s interruption during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for Best Female Video may have stemmed from the bottle of Hennessey he was carrying into the VMA’s. He kept his shades on and breezed down the carpet without stopping to talk to anyone but his body suit clad girlfriend.
Swift, on the other hand, smiled and waved as the hoards of fans across the street screamed her name. Despite having arrived by horse-drawn carriage and wearing a stunning sparkly gown, Swift seemed reasonably down to earth. She arrived a few minutes before nine, but Swift still chatted with a few members of the press as she hurried towards Radio City.
