Everyone is keeping a secret. If not all, most are feeling like that a secret is consuming their lives. Whether it is about a job, romance, unrequited love, death, religion or self-esteem, Frank Warren encourages those who are brave enough to write it on a postcard and let themselves free.
The Pace Press experienced Frank Warren's motivational PostSecret Live! presentation on Jan. 10 at New World Stages Theater.
Frank Warren began PostSecret in Nov. 2004 as a fun experiment where he asked anyone on the streets of his hometown, Germantown, Md. to share a secret that have never told anyone—anonymously of course. Over time it grew to be an endearing human testament of courage.
The presentation opens with the well-known All-American Reject's music video titled, "Dirty Little Secret," which featured Warren's collected postcards. For those who find that the postcards showing up on the "Dirty Little Secret" music video is a commercial sell-out, don't fret.
The project has humble beginnings and Warren strives to keep the humble attitude thriving as he asked the band members of the All-American Rejects to donate $10,000 to the Hope Hotline.
He literally gets hundreds and hundreds of anonymous postcards a day with unique art on one side and a breath of relief on the other. It takes a lot of work to collect all the postcards and go through them and thus, more than one person is needed to keep this project flowing.
Mail Carrier Kathy, who Warren introduces to thousands across the country at his PostSecret Live! events is the most important part of the project as she is the middle man, the person who handles all the postcards before Warren does.
Along with describing Kathy's role in the project, he presents postcards he's gotten in a slideshow; postcards ranging from "I love you's" to "I never want to see you again, and I'm proud to say it." Warren explained how each postcard affected his life in one way or another.
He continually posts the thousands of postcards on his Web site and for many of his fans, viewing the blog has become a "religion" of it's own with many sending their postcards and constantly checking to see if they make it to the blog, and others just find strength and inspiration from other's outbursts and confessions. Some even use the blog as a way to propose to their significant others making the project not only a way to spill the beans, but to begin a new life.
The finale of the PostSecret Live! event is famously the most powerful part in which members of the audience step up to the microphones positioned through the auditorium for people to reveal their darkest secrets or declarations.
The finale was especially powerful and inspiring at this event because a girl claimed she was free from the thoughts of suicide and finally happy, a boy confessed that he has loved his best friend for years and his best friend happened to be sitting next to him. Another girl confessed that all the secrets she possesses are not even hers, but of others constantly telling her their own, and they are eating her alive.
Once these strangers in the room began to speak of their inner demons the room immediately became emotional and soon enough there was not a dry eye in the entire auditorium.
This could be exactly what Warren's plan is: to get our emotions and secrets out into the world.
PostSecret is not only a phenomenon across the country, but worldwide. With the help of the internet, Warren is able to showcase the postcards he gets to those in different countries and thus, he gets postcards from around the world as well. The postcards come in all languages , ranging from French, Japanese and German, but they all share a similar characteristic: a secret that has taken someone's conscience hostage.
PostSecret is a unique project in that it has grown into an entity with an ability to surpass language barriers and get to the heart of the matter: freedom. Because of accessibility of the project's blog, people all over the world are able to showcase themselves and release their inner demons.
The collected postcards can be seen in his five "PostSecret" books and now his newly released sixth called "PostSecret: Confessions on Life, Death and God."
His latest book hits a little closer to home for Warren as many of the postcards explore the semi-taboo issue of suicide; the same outcome of which Warren lost his friend. Among suicide, the book includes postcards that explore God and what it is about the little things in life that get to us like romance, self-esteem and the one who got away.
Warren is a keeper of millions of secrets; ironically this doesn't make anyone think twice about sending him a postcard.
He encourages people to take a leap of faith and say too much instead of nothing at all, even if it is to a stranger.
