MTV's 2009 Video Music Awards hosted by Russell Brand brought hype and mayhem. From stars with "big egos" interrupting acceptance speeches to wild outfits that will not soon be forgotten, the VMA's will be a topic of discussion for a very long time.

Unlike previous VMA's, viewers watched and "Tweeted" their thoughts along with posting Facebook statuses. The award show particularly focused on Tweets and Twitter's Trending Topics of the night.

The top ones included Shakira and Pink wearing the same dress, Lady Gaga's colorful array of outfits and various performances, but most the most shocking event of the night was Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift's acceptance speech for Best Female Video. Swift won for the video for her latest single "You Belong with Me," beating Beyonce's "Single Ladies."

West appeared out of nowhere and grabbed the microphone from Swift stating, "Taylor, I'm really happy for you and everything, but Beyonce had the best video of all time…of all time!"

As West made this statement, the camera cut to Beyonce, who looked shocked and surprised. He then shrugged and gave the microphone back to Swift. In shock, Swift quickly finished her speech and walked off the stage.

Celebrities in the audience commented and Tweeted on the incident. Katy Perry stated, "FUCK U KANYE. IT'S LIKE U STEPPED 0N A KITTEN."

Pink also stated, "Kanye west is the biggest piece of shit on earth. Quote me."
Perez Hilton's Tweet simply said, "WTF KANYE!"

After the evening of the VMAs, Tim McGraw later commented, "Kanye needs to get his ass whooped."

Also off the record, President Barack Obama referred to West as a "jackass."

On the red carpet West drank from a bottle of Hennessey as he proceeded into Radio City Music Hall, gave the bottle to girlfriend Amber Rose who drank a substantial amount and then gave the remaining menial leftovers to Joe Jackson inside of the venue.

Later on in the show after Beyonce won Video of the Year for her hit, "Single Ladies," she stated, "I remember being 17 years old, up for my first MTV award with Destiny's Child and it was one of the most exciting moments in my life. So, I'd like for Taylor to come out and have her moment."

Swift came out and redid her acceptance speech a second time without any further interruptions by West.

Notable performances included a tribute to Michael Jackson where a plethora of dancers recreated his signature moves from his various hits. Janet Jackson also did a tribute to Michael Jackson for their famous and only duet "Scream."

Jackson performed the same choreography in the original music video by removing herself from the video alongside Michael and danced live.

Lady Gaga performed her latest single "Paparazzi," where there was a blood fest as a representation of the music video in which Gaga is almost murdered.

Kid Cudi also performed a tribute for DJ AM. With dancers at her side, Beyonce put on a massive performance for her hit single, "Single Ladies."

Closing out the night Jay-Z performed "Empire State of Mind" along with Alicia Keys off the newly released album The Blueprint 3. Lil' Mama randomly came onto stage throwing her arms in the air to pay homage to her city.

There is no doubt that this year's VMA's were very captivating in the sense that you did not want to change the channel during commercials.

The ingredients of wild outfits, acceptance speech interruptions, posthumous tributes and performance interruptions make a great recipe for an award show that will be discussed in the coming weeks.
