On Tuesday, January 28, the University's radio station, WPUB, started streaming over the Internet. Using a Windows Media Player, live broadcasts can be heard 24 hours a day at www.wpub.org.
Located on the 9th floor of 41 Park Row, WPUB has been Pace's radio station since the early 80s. However, for the more than a year, only residents of Maria's Tower have been able to receive WPUB transmissions via cable channel 38. Still, students usually complained that the audio reception was bad, and almost no one knew WPUB existed.
"Well its still around and is coming back strong this semester," said Michael Pierry, General Manager of WPUB. "This is a big improvement from its previous methods," he added, speaking about the different ways WPUB has been transmitted.
It has been a tough ride for WPUB over the last few years. Due to poor management by past directors, the station's funding was stopped and member benefits, such as tuition remission, were cut. Since then the station has received some funding and has developed a tentative rapport with the Student Development and Campus Activities office (SDACA) for the spring 2002 -2003 year. The current General Managers are Lina Glezer and Michael Pierry
"We have a lot in store for the year, and streaming is just one of the many improvements you will see from WPUB," said Pierry. "We are currently changing our look, and getting rid of old equipment. Our next goal is to start an ad campaign to promote the station and our mobile unit"
With help from DoIT and former Assistant Dean and Director of Student Life Dawn Knipe, WPUB was able to obtain the necessary computers and software needed to start streaming over the Internet. "We discovered that WRPW [Westchester campus radio station] was streaming on the Net last semester and we decided that we should too," said Pierry.
