Towards the end of an hour set at “The Bitter End,” the lead singer of Brizz (named Brizz) announced that the next song was about ‘how people get f——d in the music business.” They sounded bitter. Maybe they had reason to be.

The music Brizz creates is not very original. A spin-off is a spin-off is a spin-off, and in the naïve tradition of Limp Biskit and Kid Rock, the music Brizz makes can’t be fit into one single genre. That’s not because it’s eclectic, rather it’s due to the fact that the music has no voice of its own.

Just as ‘ska’ is a rip off of reggae and punk, as field hockey is a rip off of hockey and lacrosse, this new brand of rap and rock is a rip off of…well… rap and rock. I don’t want to seem too down on these guys, though. What should be noted is that these guys are as good as Limp Biskit. Limp Biskit, however, found success first, through whatever stroke of luck or chance. There might be no more room for a twin band. Brizz has songs that are as catchy as anything I’ve heard from the meager ‘fake anger’ anthems Fred Durst forces down the throats of willing, confused, shallow teens.

Don’t get me wrong, Brizz can play. Drummer Timothy DiDuro really stood out. The guitar was powerful. The balance between the guitar, the drums and the bass was near perfect. The songs were much more catchy than they came across on the album. “Destiny” and “Moving On” have definite single-potential.

In today’s mainstream music scene, which is devoid of meaning or talent, Brizz can play pretty respectable music. They’re the average garage band who decided to get serious. They work hard, they’re humble and they can certainly play the short number of songs they’ve written flawlessly. Some of them aren’t too bad. Don’t be surprised to see them on College Television Network around Pace in the future… just question whether they should be proud.
